Your agent

Hermes Agent

Hermes can save prompts, tool activity and its own memory notes in MemIndex. It receives recent project work at session start and can receive matching notes as you ask new questions.

Set up

Install Hermes Agent first. Then run:

npx memindex install --ide hermes

The installer places the provider in plugins/memindex/ inside your Hermes folder and selects it in that folder's config.yaml. The folder is ~/.hermes on macOS and Linux and %LOCALAPPDATA%\hermes on Windows. HERMES_HOME changes it.

It also adds MemIndex's search tools when the installed search files are available. If setup reports missing search files, rerun the main installer to restore them. An existing mcp_servers.memindex entry that you created is left alone; check that it connects to the memory store you intend to use.

Start a new Hermes session after setup.

Use it

Work normally. Hermes sends prompts and tool results to MemIndex, subject to your privacy and project settings. Its memory tools and MemIndex searches are left out of tool recording. Memory notes that Hermes adds or replaces are saved separately.

Ask Hermes to find a past decision:

Search MemIndex for why we changed the login timeout.

Scheduled jobs and other non-primary agents can read memory through this provider. They do not record new work through it. Tool calls from delegated child agents are also left out.

Check it

npx memindex status
npx memindex doctor

Complete a tool task in Hermes. After MemIndex processes it, ask Hermes to find that work. Start a new session to check the recent project notes.

If MemIndex is unavailable, Hermes continues without the extra memory. Check both recording and search after reconnecting.

Use a server

The provider supports a configured MemIndex server as well as the local worker. See Hosting and plans for server setup.

Remove it

npx memindex uninstall removes MemIndex and its integrations. For Hermes, it restores the earlier provider choice if you have not changed that choice since setup. It removes the search entry only when the installer added it.

See Privacy and Troubleshooting.
