Claude Desktop
Claude Desktop can search memory that MemIndex has already recorded. This setup does not automatically record Desktop conversations.
Complete Install first. Keep the local MemIndex service available on the same machine as Claude Desktop.
Add a MemIndex entry to Claude Desktop's configuration. Keep any other server entries you already have.

On macOS, the configuration file is ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json. On Windows, it is %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json.
Close and reopen Claude Desktop after saving the file. The npx command must be available to the app. If Desktop cannot find it, use the full path to your installed npx program.
Ask a specific question about work MemIndex has recorded. For example: “Search MemIndex for our decision about the sign-in flow.” Name the project when the question belongs to one project.
For local memory, the agent starts with search, checks nearby work with timeline, then reads selected notes with get_observations. It chooses the relevant notes at each step. An empty result can mean there are no recorded notes yet.
If the connection does not appear, check the configuration for valid JSON and restart Desktop. Run npx memindex doctor for local setup checks. See Troubleshooting.
